Hire Me - I'm a Professional Genealogist specializing in North Carolina research!

Why am I doing all this?  'Cause I love to talk Allred!

In 1996, while visiting my Aunt Fran, my cousin Dianne and I were looking at family photos - which, of course, didn't have anything written on the back.  No identification.  So, we asked over and over "Who's that" until my Aunt muttered "I wish someone would write all this stuff down."  I thought, "hmmmm, I could do that."  And so it started.

"Aren't you finished doing all that family tree stuff yet?"

Nope.  As any good genealogist knows, you're not finished until you've traced your tree all the way back to Adam and Eve.  I'm not even close!

My "brick wall" is my Great Great Great Grandfather, Jesse Allred (1783 - 1844).  Jesse was married to Alsey York (1790 - abt 1870).  My first documented evidence that Jesse was living in Randolph County, NC is the 1808 land record showing he bought land from William Erwin.  This is the same land Jesse lived on, raised his family on, and died on.  It is located along today's Randolph Church Road in NE Randolph County.

Jesse told his children and grandchildren that he didn't have any parents and was found out in the woods on a tree stump.  The term "Woods Baby" was common in the 1800's, local terminology for illegitimate or bastard.  He never discussed who raised him, never discussed any siblings or cousins.  Many, including me, have looked and looked, but none have ever figured out who Jesse's parents were.

Most likely, Jesse was the grandson or great grandson of one of those first four Allred men who showed up in NC in the mid 1700's.  Lately I've been looking closely at John's daughter, Lydia, who was raped in 1786 per court records.  Could she have been Jesse's mother?  Maybe, but, since I can't prove he was in NC prior to 1808, I have to keep in mind that he may have come to Randolph County as an adult and may not be related to any of those first four Allreds.  Now, wouldn't that be a good joke on me after I've collected all this info on the family!!!

Since I haven't had any success with Jesse - I've decided to back up and look at all the Allreds living in NC in the 1700's and early 1800's.  Maybe, by researching all those other Allreds, I'll find a clue about who Jesse was.  Maybe..........

So, the search goes on.............
