What Happened to
Isaac Allred?

by:  Randy Bumgardner

"Isaac Allred has long been a mystery in my family.   He was born about
1854.  Isaac married Jennie and they had five daughters.  The family lived
in the Vasper area near Jacksboro, TN at the Anderson / Claiborne County
line.  Sometime after 1894, Isaac disappears from all records.  Family
legend says Isaac deserted his family and may have started another family.
One older family member recalls a story that Isaac went to the barn and
saddled up the horse one day.  When his daughters asked to go with him, he
told them that he had an errand to do and would be back in a little bit.  He
never returned.  Jennie reportedly kept a shotgun by the door and greeted
all strangers with the barrel of her gun.  She never remarried and raised
her daughters alone.

What can be documented is:

wpe53.jpg (10053 bytes) Mariah Jane "Jennie" Woods Allred was born in Tennessee on October 16, 1854,
she died on July 17, 1928.  No birth date or death date has been found for
Isaac Allred.

Isaac Allred married Mariah Jane Woods on August 23, 1874 in Knox County,
TN.

By 180, Isaac and Jennie were living in Anderson County, TN, where Isaac was
listed on the 1880 census as 25 years old.  Jennie was also listed as 25
years old.

On the 1900 Anderson County, TN census, Mariah J. Allred is head of
household with no mention of Isaac.

On the 1910 Anderson County, TN census, Mariah J. Allred is living with her
son-in-law and daughter, James and Flora Bailey

One the 1920 Anderson County Census, Jane Allred is again head of household
with daughter Leona Romine living with her.

Isaac and Jennie had five daughters:

Leona Hannah, born July 16, 1875 and died February 4, 1943.  She married a
Romine.

Nora Lou, born November 11, 1879 and died April 2, 1964.  She married
William Stookesbury.

Flora, born May 7, 1886 and died November 16, 1964.  She married James
Bailey

Martha Maude, born September 15, 1891 and died August 24, 1975.  She married
Lacy Harness.

Mable Edna, born Mary 1, 1894 and died June 16, 1962.  She married Alonzo
Graham.

Jennie Allred and all five daughters are buried at sunset Cemetery in
Clinton, TN.  If anyone can she light on what happened to Isaac Allred,
