ECAFA Meeting Minutes The ECAFA
met Thursday, September 25th, at Best Foods Cafeteria in Siler City. 19 members
were present: Nancy
Martin ECAFA President, Linda Allred Cooper, opened the meeting by
telling everyone about the Randolph County Genealogical Society (RCGS).
The RCGS publishes a journal quarterly which contains transcriptions of
original Randolph County, NC, records such as tax lists, court records, wills
and estate records, etc., and research reports on Randolph County original
families and historical events. Each
journal is indexed, making it very easy to find the person or family or event
you are researching. Cost is $20
per year. Linda passed out copies of a 13 page research report on the
family of Joseph Allred (son of the “original” John) as an example of the
type of information contained in the RCGS journal.
(Permission to copy this report had been granted by Larry Cates who is
the author of the report and editor of the RCGS Journal.) If you were not present at this meeting and would like a
copy of this report, please contact Linda. Wayne Ward then turned the meeting discussion to the
recorded death date of Thomas York, a possible American Patriot who is buried at
Sandy Creek Baptist Church. Members
discussed the new memorial tombstone which Dennis York will be placing on Thomas
York’s grave sometime in October 2003. Linda then turned the meeting discussion to a review of the
2003 Reunion. ECAFA Treasurer
Harlan Sexton passed out copies of the financial statement from the reunion –
how much was collected from each activity (raffle, silent auction, sales of
t-shirts/hats, donations, etc.) and how much was spent on expenses.
Every member present was given an opportunity to voice opinions about
this year’s reunion schedule, format and entertainment.
Each member also was asked to make suggestions for next year’s reunion. Harlan Sexton made a Motion to use ECAFA funds to
purchase stamps & envelopes and create a questionnaire and Self Addressed
Stamped Envelope (for return to ECAFA) which will be sent to everyone who signed
the 2003 Reunion registration book. This
questionnaire would contain specific questions about each Reunion day’s events
/ activities especially the musical entertainment which was provided on Saturday
afternoon. Hollis Allred seconded
the motion and all members voted “Yes”. Linda agreed to create the questionnaire with Darrell
Allred’s help. A report on
the feedback from this questionnaire will be given at the next ECAFA meeting. Darrell Allred turned the discussion to his presentation
during Saturday’s Reunion Family Meeting about the York Military Ceremony and
why it was cancelled. Darrell
made a Motion that a copy of his presentation be included in these ECAFA minutes
as part of our permanent record. Harlan
Sexton seconded the motion and all members voted “Yes”.
Harlan Sexton informed the members that he has opened a new
Post Office Box for the ECAFA. The
new ECAFA address will be: East Coast Allred Family Association This address will be used for all official ECAFA business
and correspondence. Harlan also informed the members that he will be moving the
ECAFA bank account to First National Bank in Asheboro, NC.
He explained that there had been some problems with Randolph Bank where
the account is at currently, and after discussion with the ECAFA President
(Linda) and ECAFA Founder (Eddie Clay Allred), the bank account would be moved.
Members voiced their approval with this decision. Discussion then turned to some future one-two day trip plans
for the ECAFA. These trips will be
aimed at visiting historical sites in North Carolina or neighboring states.
These educational trips will contain history lessons about each site and
how our ancestors participated in each site and / or event.
The first trip is planned for December 13, 2003 when we will visit
Tryon
Palace in New Bern, NC. Tryon
Palace was built in the 1760’s using tax money collected from North
Carolina’s residents by Governor William Tryon.
The building of Tryon Palace and how it was financed is part of the
reason for the War of the Regulation and Battle of Alamance which took place May
16, 1771 in Alamance County, NC. Many
of Randolph County’s settlers (our ancestors) were involved in this Regulator
Movement and the history lesson for this trip will be about these events.
Cost will be $54 per person and includes transportation (via Holiday
Tours) and entrance fees for Tryon Palace, the Dixon-Stevenson House (built
1830’s) and the John Wright Stanley House (built 1780’s).
For more information on this trip, contact Linda or Becky.
Advertisement flyers about this trip will be posted on the AFO web site,
and various local libraries and public places in Randolph and surrounding
counties. All members present received a copy of the brochure “North
Carolina Historic Sites” published by the Division of Archives and History,
Department of Cultural Resources, Raleigh, NC.
This brochure contains information on 25 historic sites scattered across
North Carolina. Linda asked that
each member study the brochure and select sites that interest them.
During our October 2003 meeting, we will discuss and select future trips.
The next ECAFA meeting will be held Saturday, October 18,
2003, at 12 noon at the home of Hollis and Sara Allred (Denton, NC).
Contact Sara if you need a map and / or driving directions.
This will be a covered dish lunch meeting.
Bring your yard chairs!! If
it’s pretty weather, we will be eating / meeting outside.
