The meeting was recorded and sent to Dennis York who lives in Dallas, TX.

Linda (President) began the meeting by telling of two (Utah) Allred family deaths which happened within the past week.  Linda then gave a report on the Great Wagon Road research trip (June 4 – 12).   Eight researchers went on the trip:  Ruth Ann Jones, Ann Burton, Dawnell Griffin, Amanda Griffin, Sue Estep, Nancy Martin, Linda Cooper and Alice Pottmyer.  At each stop, all searched for information / documentation pertaining to the original Randolph County settlers and/or information about travel down the Great Wagon Road in the early and mid 1700’s.  A more detailed report of our findings will be presented at the next ECAFA meeting.

Linda then gave a genealogy report on the York, Janney, Pemberton and Allred families and how they traveled together from England to America.  She also explained how these families were instrumental in the founding of the Quaker Church in both England and America through contacts and friendship with William Penn, Ralph Ridgeway, Roger Longworth and George Fox.

A full and detailed report on this will be presented at the upcoming Randolph County Reunion in September 2005.

There was s short discussion about the upcoming Reunion in Randolph County.  Linda suggested a new presentation to take place Saturday morning of the reunion on experiences our ancestors would have had crossing the ocean from England to America in the late 1600’s and early 1700’s.  An outline of a passenger ship (90ft X 24ft) could be marked off on the lawn and each participant giving the name of a passenger or crew member.  That passenger and/or crew members experiences would then be described using the log of the ship Submission which was owned by William Penn and sailed to America in 1682.   The members agreed this could be an interesting presentation.

Conversation then turned to the Allred-Trogdon Cemetery and the trees being cut / cleared by MacDowell Lumber Company.  Loggers have blocked the road leading to the cemetery, destroying the road in sections.  Large trees have been cut along the cemetery property line and everyone expressed concerns that the cemetery could very easily be damaged or destroyed by these loggers.  Harlan Sexton explained that he had visited the cemetery and attempted to talk to the loggers with no success.  Harlan also explained that the former land owner, Alton Garner, and the owner of the cow pasture bordering the cemetery, Mr. Vuncannon, had also expressed concern and had tried talking to the loggers about damage to the road and cemetery – but were either ignored or met with apathy.

Linda told the group that James Stephenson, II, of Stephenson & Stephenson, LLP, a litigating attorney, has written a letter to MacDowell Lumber Company on behalf of the ECAFA expressing our concerns and threatening legal action if the cemetery is damaged in any way.  The law firm (which Linda works at) has volunteered to represent the ECAFA Pro Bono if any legal action is necessary.   Copies of the letter to MacDowell Lumber were distributed for the ECAFA to read and all ECAFA officers received a copy for their files.

Linda also encouraged members to visit the cemetery on a daily basis, taking turns, and make sure the loggers see you and see you taking photos.  This will remind them on a daily basis that we are very concerned about the cemetery and serious about protecting it.  The photos can also be used in any future legal action if ever necessary.   An update will be given at the next ECAFA meeting.

Eddie York gave an update on the York family cemetery located near Ramseur that he has been working on.  He explained that the cemetery has been cleaned off and the current owner is still very interested in transferring ownership to the ECAFA.  There was some discussion about getting a survey done and deed drawn up.  Eddie agreed to work with Harlan and Franklin on this project and to give us an update at the next meeting.  Once ownership has been transferred, the ECAFA will schedule a work day in this cemetery so we can begin recording the tombstones for our records and for the Randolph Room, Randolph County Genealogical Society and Randolph County Register of Deeds.

The next ECAFA meeting will beheld Tuesday, July 19th, at 6pm at Best Foods Cafeteria in Siler City.  The main topics on the agenda will be an update on the York Cemetery project and the upcoming Reunion plans.
