President, Linda Cooper, opened the meeting by passing around a Get Well Card for everyone to sign.  This card will be sent to member Hilda York (Dallas, TX) who is in the hospital.

A Thank You note from Owen Allred (Bluffdale, UT) and a newsletter article about Georgia Fultz was also passed around for everyone to read.  Georgia Fultz, who lived in Randolph County, had maintained an abandoned graveyard in Randleman most of her adult life, and after her death, was buried there.  Considering the fact that our ECAFA main goal is to locate, identify, clean, record and preserve as many abandoned graveyards in Randolph County as possible, we all agreed this was a very interesting article.

The members then discussed pursuing ownership of the Odell - Trogdon Cemetery located along HWY 49 (Old Liberty Road) near Millboro, Randolph County.  Families known buried in this cemetery are:  Trogdon, Odell, York, Allred, Julian and Diffee - all descendants of some of Randolph County's original settlers.  The ECAFA has cleaned this cemetery, cutting away most of the small brush and undergrowth, with permission of the current owners (Reddings who live in Greensboro).  All tombstones found have been recorded and photographed, this information posted on the AFO web site and placed in the Randolph Room.  However, the current owners are elderly and continued access to this cemetery may change once the owners die or the property is sold.  After discussion, members voted to have Harlan Sexton and James Eugene Allred approach the current owners to see if they would be interested in donating the cemetery land to the ECAFA.  Harlan will talk to a local surveyor, and James Eugene will talk to our ECAFA lawyer to begin the transfer process.  A 2nd motion was approved that Harlan and James Eugene have permission to actively pursue the process and possibly complete it without continued input from the ECAFA members, using their best judgment as the process unfolds.  The members agreed that considering the ill health of the current owners, we need to work on this as soon as possible - and as quickly as possible.

A brief "History of the Odell-Trogdon Cemetery" was passed around for everyone to review. This "History" was written in the early 1970's by Lawrence Routh and was found on file in the Randolph Room.  Per this "History", the Odell-Trogdon Cemetery is located on land originally owned by John Julian, part of his original land grant dated 1762.

The members briefly discussed pursuing ownership of the Lane-Foust Cemetery, also abandoned, located near the swimming pool/recreation area in Ramseur.  Everyone agreed to look into this after everything is finalized with the Odell-Trogdon Cemetery.   Locating these abandoned cemeteries, cleaning them, recording and photographing them, and possibly gaining ownership so we can preserve and maintain them for future generations is one of the main goals of the ECAFA.  So many of the original settlers of central North Carolina are buried in these cemeteries, so we are helping to preserve our heritage and history.

Linda passed out brochures from the North Carolina Genealogical Society advertising their Eastern Regional Summer Workshop to be held in Goldsboro on July 19, 2003.  "A Day With Helen Leary" will feature seminars and workshops aimed at helping genealogists.  Linda told everyone that she is planning to attend and invited everyone to join her.

The ECAFA DNA project was discussed next.  A graph showing the current test results was passed out as Linda explained what the markers meant.  20 test results have come back so far.  5 members have upgraded to the 25 marker test, with 2 of the results back and noted on the graph.  Linda told everyone that we need someone from the "original" John Allred branch of the family to take the test, but that branch of the family was "blessed with girls and very few boys", so finding a male descendant to participate would be a challenge.

Reunion flyers were passed out and the reunion schedule was discussed next.  After discussion, the schedule was approved.  Linda will make copies which will be passed out at our next meeting for everyone to distribute and post around the county.

Everyone participated in a fun quiz on the origin of some old terms that we've grown up hearing.  Terms such as:  "it's raining cats and dogs", "don't throw the baby out with the bath water", "saved by the bell" and "dead ringer".   Learning the origin of these terms is a fun way to learn about our ancestor's lives and lifestyles.

A Pemberton Family tree graph was passed out along with an article written about the Pemberton family cemetery now located on Pennsbury Manor, Bucks County, PA.  Pennsbury Manor was the summer home of William Penn, founder of the Quaker Church.  The Pembertons were close friends of William Penn.  The members spent a few minutes discussing the Pemberton family and the archaeologists who participated in moving the cemetery from it's original site to Pennsbury Manor in the 1950's.  As each grave was exhumed, forensic information was recorded revealing a lot about the family and their lifestyle.  During a future trip to Pennsylvania, we will be visiting this graveyard.

Meeting adjourned.

The next ECAFA meeting will be held around the first of August - date to be announced soon.
