Linda opened the meeting by discussing the trips planned for the Allred Reunion, September 7th and 8th, 2006.  Thursday, 7th, trip to Cowpens Battleground, Cheney,  South Carolina and September 8th, trip to Guilford Courthouse National Military Park.  We hope to reserve a tour bus for these events.  Details later.  Alice Pottmyer gave a talk concerning our  ancestors in the Revolutionary War. Per the 1779 Randolph County, North Carolina Tax List and other records, the following men were “of age” to have served in the American Revolution.

Thomas Allred     - the “original”
Elias Allred          - son of  the “original “ Thomas
William Allred      - son of the “original” Thomas
James Allred          - son of the “original” Thomas
Thomas Allred       - son of the “original” Thomas
John Allred            - the “original”
John Allred            - son of the “original”
William Allred       - the “original” William Allred       - son of the “original”.

These Allreds have been documented using a variety of records found in the NC State Archives and in the National Archives in Washington, D.C.

Also discussed was Martha McGee Bell.  Martha is celebrated as one of Randolph County’s Revolutionary Heroines.  In 1929 a marker honoring her was placed at the site of the Battle of Guilford Courthouse.  Books on Martha McGee Bell are located in the Randolph Room of the Asheboro Pubic Library.

Following breakfast, we traveled to Tannenbaum Historic Park and the Joseph Hoskins 18th century farmstead.  The Colonial Heritage Center is located here.

We next visited the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park viewing colonial life and hearth cooking and other demonstrations.  A 30 minute movie of the Battle of Guilford Courthouse was shown at the Visitor Center.  11:30 AM we attended the “Observance Program for the 225th Anniversary of the Battle of Guilford Courthouse – 1781-2006”.

We then traveled to Price Park (at New Garden Road and Hobbs Road, 2 miles west of Battleground Avenue/US 200) to watch the battle between the forces of American General Nathaniel Greene and British General Charles Cornwallis, March 15, 1781.  Greene lost the battle but won the campaign.  His strategic skills thereafter brought the War in the South to a successful close.  This event brought to a close a very exciting and colorful day.

Next ECAFA Meeting to be announced.
